Fishing Report July 23, 2008
The day before fishing I called up a few of my friends to see if they wanted
to go do some dolphin fishing and daytime swordfishing. We had a great crew
with three profeesional mates, Leo, Nick Carullo, and myself. Then we had
Captain Terry Claus, who has had 30 years of experience on the water, also
joining us were Ryan Dahan, Tyler Claus and Will Morison. How can you not catch fish with a crew like that.
We departed from the dock on our 2006 52' Viking at 8:00 am on Wednesday July 23. Then, we caught sardines and threadfins for dolphin.
We then idled out to 600 ft and the Capt crawled up to the tower to start looking for the dolphin. In addition, found a weedline in 1100 ft which brought us to a frigit bird. That frigit gave us 20 nice schooly dolphin with a few gaffers thrown in the mix. After finishing that school we continued heading down the weedline and found hundreds of more dolphin. We then got picky, so Captain Terry started directing us where to cast from the tower to the bigger fish in the school. Furthermore we ended dolphin fishing with 40 dolphin in the fish box.
Capt. Terry told the crew and I to start getting prepared to drop for swordfish. Leo was first up at 11:00 am to start dropping down 1800 ft.with the daiwa electric reel.. We dropped two baits down with 18 lbs. of weight. Leo, Nick and I, took turns watching the rod tip for the slightest bump for the indication of a swordfish to be on the line. On the fourth drop we got the bite and we were hooked up, but not for long. We fought the fish for 10 minutes and he fell off. We made two more drops which kept us drifting to the North up until Ft. Lauderdale. It was 6:00 pm and we decided to head in.
In conclusion of our trip in the Gulf Stream we caught 40 dolphin, went 0 for 1 on swordfish, and most of all had fun.
